Jayden Bezzant
Property Brokers Manawatū Jets guard Jayden Bezzant will return to the team in 2021.
Bezzant, 24, started every game at the Sal’s NBL Showdown and was an important component in the team’s historic march to the final.
Jets coach Tim McTamney was pleased his young court general has committed to returning after Bezzant attracted interest from other franchises.
“While his basketball ability is obvious, it needs to be said that Jayden is an exceptional young man with real character,” McTamney said.
“I have been thoroughly impressed with his attitude, his commitment to learn and to grow as a player, and the loyalty he showed to his team and this franchise.”
Bezzant impressed throughout the Showdown with his ability to score and create chances for his team-mates. McTamney was pleased with his calmness and confidence in high-pressure situations. Bezzant averaged 17.3 points, while adding 3.1 rebounds and 3.6 assists, in just over 30 minutes a game.
McTamney’s free-moving, up-tempo style of play was the perfect match for Bezzant’s skills. He became the surprise package of the Showdown and Bezzant can’t wait to get back into green and white, after enjoying his first experience as a Jet.
“Being part of the Jets in 2020 was a great experience. [McTamney] and the entire management team were incredibly supportive throughout the season.
“The way we were asked to play was new, exciting and challenging, but it really allowed me to showcase my playing ability.
“The time I spent with my team was something I will always cherish and I really am looking forward to being a Jet again. We are all intent on going one better in 2021.”
After their heart-breaking 79-77 loss to the Otago Nuggets in this year’s final, McTamney and his Jets team will know what it takes to win a championship. Bezzant’s signing will be a huge boost to the Jets in establishing themselves as a playoff team.
The Jets’ roster is taking shape and it is likely more players from this year’s successful team will be in the equation for 2021. McTamney is playing his cards close to his chest, but suggested there will be more exciting signing news coming.
The Jets start next year’s Sal’s NBL against the Auckland Huskies in Auckland on April 29.
