Coronavirus: Sport to lose at least $75 million as gaming money dries up

Sports organisations and community sports clubs are expected to take a significant hit in funding over the next 12 months as Class 4 gaming funds run dry.

Class 4 gaming - gaming machines in pubs and clubs - injects about $150 million into New Zealand sport annually.

Martin Snedden, New Zealand Cricket's project leader, said sports bodies are expecting at least a 50 per cent hit to funding from this method.

He said approximately 30 to 35 different Class 4 gaming trusts oversee the distribution of funds to national sports bodies and regional associations and unions, right through to local sports clubs.

"That sort of money underpins a lot of what happens within community sport in New Zealand," he said. "What we know is a lot of that is going to disappear in the next 12 months. "The best guess at the moment is it's going to be more than 50 per cent." He spoke via Zoom on Friday at the Trans-Tasman Business Circle and Women in Sport Aotearoa Sports Connect Series….
